La Sauvanie & Surrounding area

Verteillac

The surrounding area is mostly agricultural with sunflower fields and expanses of open countryside.

Though we are in Cherval, which is a very small village with a bar / restaurant and boulangerie our  nearest town is Verteillac which is 3 kms away and has a shop that is a supermarket, iron mongers, TV & white goods and gardening equipment - we call it Arkrights, bank, post office and a number of bars and restaurants. It has a small market every Saturday and a large antique market every month.

Riberac which is 15 mins away is a large market town famous for its weekly market and monthly antique market. There are a number of large supermarkets the main one being LeClercs. Restaurants are not great but this may change. There is the opportunity to hire canoes but this is generally done with others as you are taken up river as a starting point. Very slow and ideal for children.

Close by are golf courses at Perigueux, Angouleme and Aubeterre, horse riding,  a lake with beaches for swimming at La Jemaye (photos below)  and the river at Bergerac for canoeing and fishing. We have a number of  bikes at the house. We recommend that you bring bikes for young children. There are many quiet roads around La Sauvanie for a short or long  ride through the sunflower fields or further afield.

There are Tourist Offices at Verteillac and Riberac.

There are 2 photos of Aubeterre which is very close  with many restaurants in the main square, interesting shops selling jewelery and pottery,  a night market in the summer and a church built into the hillside. The other photos are of Brantome which is very picturesque with many riverside restaurants(towards Perigueux) and Villebois Lavelette only 15 minutes away with its castle and small town.

If we head south east beyond Perigueux to the Lot & Dordogne valley.Places we are yet to visit are Sarlat, Chateau de Castelnaud, Beynac - ideal for canoeing, La Roque Gageac, Saint Cyprien and the Lot cliffs , chateaux and castles.
